A Place to Pray
These paintings, completed in 2007, are a return to my Brunelleschi-inspired watery renditions of Florentine Cathedrals (Making Absences, 2004). Perhaps the distance from the experience or my abstract work since has made the vaulted interiors more flat and dense than before. The study of space continues, as does the sense of freedom in the large scale and splashy paint, yet these paintings ask more about the roles of color and opacity. Columns loom and shadows are ambivalent as to whether to fall back or sit in the foreground.
